Alan taught in Suffolk secondary schools and led large, successful science and physics departments.

Since 2013 he has become well-known for the science teacher training he provides to both trainees and experienced teachers throughout East Anglia, the UK and internationally. This includes work for STEM Learning, the Institute of Physics, the Perimeter Institute, plus local universities and SCITT providers.
