Mike Barfield is an award-winning cartoonist, children's author, poet and performer. He has a first class biology degree from King's College London and now writes and draws science-based books for primary age children. His hands-on activity book series Destroy This Book in the Name of Science! now runs to three different editions and has been published all over the world, including Russia, Ukraine, Korea, France and Italy. The series encourages the reader to make card and paper models that demonstrate actual science as well as being fun to create.

His chemistry book 'The Element in the Room' (LKP, 2018) is a fun guide to the periodic table and has been shortlisted for the Blue Peter Book Awards 2019.

In addition to writing, Mike also performs shows and workshops in schools, museums, libraries and festivals across the UK. His SWAT! show is a particular favourite, in which he dressed as a giant housefly and details the amazing adaptations for survival possessed by these much hated insects. The show is full of facts, jokes, props, audience participation and frequent mentions of poo, and is suitable for both KS1 and KS2. He also does a primary school show based on his Destroy This Book series, using giant copies of the models from the books and yet more audience participation.

In addition to this, Mike has also written extensively for TV and radio with credits including The Dennis the Menace and Gnasher Show, Spitting Image, and the TV quiz Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. He has also had a regular cartoon feature in Private Eye ('Apparently...') since 1996 for which he was named Strip Cartoonist of the Year by the Cartoon Art Trust.

He loves to inspire and entertain young audiences so do please contact him if you would like to book a visit, a show or a workshop!
