Fostering Students' Future Imagination about Artificial Intelligence (210)
In the workshop we present the module on Artificial Intelligence, designed within the I SEE project (www.iseeproject.eu). After an overview of the project, we lead delegates to experience activities that make Artificial Intelligence a powerful context to foster students’ capacities to imagine the future and aspire to STEM careers.

UK-Japan Young Scientists Researching Together: Science as a cultural bridge (492)
Learn about the UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshop Programme Clifton Scientific Trust has been running with schools in Britain and Japan since 2001, and the profound impact they have on the 16-18 year old students who take part.

Since 2001 we have run 23 of these Workshops with colleagues in Japan, impacting directly more than 1200 students, and through them and the teachers who accompany them, many more in their schools.

In these week-long Workshops, British and Japanese students selected by their schools live closely together in the host university learning about each other, and working in small international teams as guests of research groups across the university led by British and Japanese scientists and engineers. They are given a project related to the work of the group, are encouraged to question and are required to think for themselves and work as team. At the end of the week, each team presents its achievements and answers questions in front of an audience including distinguished guests

The Workshops have amazing impact on the students who participate, not only in the quality of the science achieved in a very short period of time, as evidenced by the quality of their team presentations, but also in the team-working and communication skills they develop, in the global awareness and understanding they acquire and in the quality of the international friendships they form.

Our two UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshops last summer were hosted in Cambridge and Tohoku Universities respectively and taken together engaged 100 students (58 girls, 42 boys) selected by their schools, working in 17 projects led by British and Japanese scientists and engineers. The Cambridge Workshop engaged students from 16 schools in both countries, the Tohoku Workshop from 14 schools. 36 teachers accompanied their students.

The model we have achieved has much to offer young people in both countries

In 2019, we are planning Workshops again in Cambridge and in Kyoto Universities. Places are still available and if your school would like to take part please do let us know (eric.albone@clifton-scientific.org). We use the limited resources we raise to the fullest extent to support UK students from disadvantaged communities who would otherwise be excluded.
