Fixing KS3 Science (82)
All too often, Key Stage 3 has played second fiddle to its older sibling: Key Stage 4. Steadily eroded into three-year, then five-year GCSE, it is my belief that KS3 has been neglected and abandoned as a never ending cycle of circus practicals, out of date level ladders, tests that don't match taught material and mindless repetition of "fair test." We have undergone a programme of readical reimagination of our KS3 curriculum and resources: at this session I will be talking about how we have "fixed" key stage 3.

Assessment for Learning in Science: Reflections and restatement from practice and research (56)
This is a definite MUST SEE on Saturday morning of conference. The review 'Inside the Black Box' by Paul Black and Dylan Wiliam was published 20 years ago and set into action Assessment for Learning.  This session looks back over the last 20 years from both teaching and research perspectives with inputs from Paul Black, Chris Harrison and a number of the teachers, both old and new, who have taken AfL practice as the heart of what they do when teaching science. Our focus will be on 'how' and 'why' AfL works in practice, to both raise achievement and guide youngsters to develop those lifelong skills that help them learn. Teachers and educators who have been active in the Assessment for Learning movement, from one of the original project teachers(Paul Spenceley), to a former LA science advisor(Jason Harding), to a current HoD (Bianca Brunelli), an NQT(Sofia Da Luz) and a teacher researcher (Lucy Woods) will explain how this innovative acpproach to pedagogy has enhanced both student and professional learning. See evidence-based practice and practice-based evidence at its best!  Come early if you want a seat. We will have a Vox Pop booth set up nearby if you want to come along and share your thoughts and ideas of the impact of AfL in science teaching and learning.

Teaching the Nature of Science (272)
Given its importance, why is the nature of science (NoS) not always effectively taught in classrooms? I present the case that teacher beliefs are an important factor in determining how and/or if NoS is taught in classrooms. I will explore secondary-school science teachers’ beliefs using semi-structured interviews and lesson observations.

Is Feedback the Tail or the Dog? (125)
Feedback isn't the same as marking, but many schools have seen an increase in the expectations put on teachers for marking and visible assessment. Making a whole school policy work in every department in a school is a very challenging thing to do, and too often the emphasis has been on proving the teacher is complying with a policy (how many colours of pen does your school use?), rather than focussing on what will have the most impact on students. This session will look at how we have developed our own department feedback policy, which has taken a few years to get to where we think it meets our own demands of; being efficient with teacher time, high impact with students, meets whole school expectations. I will share how we developed out policy, why we feel it works and the impact it has had on teachers and students.
