The answer to this question has been contested for at least 150 years. The talk will explain why different curriculum responses emerged at different times and identify the many obstacles  that had to be overcome before science could secure a place for all pupils in primary and secondary schools. It will also suggest that past experience can be used to inform the ongoing process of science curriculum development.
