Successfully engaging S2 (England KS3) pupils and getting them to learn the formulae for both kinetic energy and gravitational potential energy using the spring jumping toys and the key cars that have springs in them. The standard experiment of stretching a spring and plotting a force extension graph is a tough one so to introduce springs I use toys and the toy experiments remind them springs can be used to store energy when compressed. The experiments can easily provide differentiated learning as tracker, the open source video analysis tool can be used. The energy stored in a spring when compressed can be found and the efficiency of storing energy in a spring investigated.Other toys will be used to help promote understanding of  concepts that some pupils find hard to grasp..
