This study, funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry, looks at how students from disadvantaged backgrounds can be encouraged to study post-compulsory chemistry. We found that student motivation, good teaching and participation in extra-curricular activities can mitigate the effect of family background in developing science aspirations amongst disadvantaged students.
