For many years Birmingham has been a pioneer in the study of the interior of the Sun using the rather unexpected phenomenon that it behaves like a (very complex) musical instrument. By this I mean that sound waves in the interior produce resonances that are long lasting. We cannot hear the sound from Earth, but we can see the effects of the resonances.
More recently, this work has been extended to studies of stars like the Sun and also those in a later stage of their life. For many hundreds of years, knowledge about stars came from observations of their surfaces. This is great but limited. In recent years these studies have all been revolutionised by observations of the interiors of stars. The methods used are inherently simple even if they require precise techniques to make them effective. They rely on observing the effects of simple sound waves propagating inside the stars. Data from the Kepler mission, launched in 2009 by NASA have driven the revolution. The mission aim was to detect small planets in the habitable zone around sun-like stars. It was very successful in that aim but also provided the information we need to study the interior regions of the stars.
